ELEVEN REFLECTIONS

by Andrea Assaf

Welcome to our multifaceted, multi-year exploration of Arab/MENA/SWANA experiences in the post-9/11 era. We invite you to join us in reflecting on the state of our nation and world--over the last two decades, and where we are now. Ways to engage include the original show, Eleven Reflections on September (digital or live) or a newly devised ensemble production of  ELEVEN REFLECTIONS ON THE NATION in a city near you!

Eleven Reflections on the Nation

Eleven Reflections on the Nation is a socially-engaged series of new performance works exploring Southwest/Central Asian and North African (SWANA), Middle Eastern/North African/South Asian (MENASA), and Muslim American experiences in the 21st century. Based on Eleven Reflections on September (below), Andrea Assaf co-creates and directs multidisciplinary, community-based, devised performances in cities across the United States. In each participating city, the performance will draw from the structure of the original piece, while engaging artists and communities who have been affected by post-9/11 policies to create their own content, illuminating our collective experiences since 2001. The result: A distinct but interconnected series of new performances across the country.

Eleven Reflections on September

Live Touring Production

Eleven Reflections on September is a poetry/spoken word, multimedia performance on Arab American experience, Wars on/of Terror, and “the constant, quiet rain of death amidst beauty” that each autumn brings in a post-9/11 world.  This production is based on the series of poems Andrea Assaf has been writing since 2001, spanning the fall of the towers, the on-going wars, and the current revolutions and conflicts sweeping through the Arab world.  Aesthetically, the poems explore the disintegration of language in the face of violence, prejudice, and unspeakable horror; as such, they progress from lyrical to abstract and broken.  The annual witnessing of autumn leaves becomes a metaphor for the fallen–soldiers and civilians … This multi-disciplinary project includes performances with interactive media design and live music; community dialogues; visual arts exhibits; open mics, panels and opportunities for action through partnerships with Iraq Veterans Against the War and other peace organizations.

Notable venues have included the 2016 National Asian American Theatre Festival at Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF); The Kennedy Center Millennium Stage, La Mama ETC, and The Apollo Soundstage as part of the 2015 Women of the World (WOW) Festival; Centro Cultural Tijuana (CECUT), Mexico, and the University of South Florida (USF) as part of the 2014 THIS Bridge series; The Straz Center for the Performing Arts, The Carpetbag Theatre, and Pangea World Theater, which commissioned the project as part of their 2011 Alternate Visions Series. Works-in-progress readings were also performed at The Bowery Poetry Festival, Hedgebrook, and the Grotowski Institute as part of the 2009 Zero Budget Festival.

The Digital Film

During the pandemic, the live production of Eleven Reflections on September was reimagined and beautifully rendered into an award-winning digital film. Told through the eyes of this exceptional international collaboration team, the film flawlessly blends theatrical performance with high quality digital production to create a multimedia, genre-bending, immersive experience. It can be presented as a film, or as an immersive installation of projections in which live performance happens, or as a live theatrical production with an immersive projection design, or as an interactive web platform. As an experimental work that lives at the intersection of live performance and digital media, "Eleven Reflections on September" is beautiful, haunting, and truly genre-shattering.
